Teaching Your Dog Basic Obedience Commands
Find out the secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer
Upon bringing home your new furry family member, you will need to train him and show him the correct way to behave in his new human world! While training, there are three important words to remember and live by. They are Patience, Persistence and Praise. Incorporating the 3 P's into your training techniques will help you successfully train your new pet and be a happy owner!
First lets start with some important rules to remember when training your dog. They are outlined them below:
Always make eye contact with your dog when training
Do not over excite your dog during training sessions
Keep the sessions short and sweet, but to the point
Use short, simple commands
Use the same word with the same meaning at all times!
Consistency is the key. If you change commands you will only confuse your dog
Always begin a command with your dogs name first to grab his attention
Always finish with fun and Praise
The Come Command
Teach this command in a quiet setting. With your dog on a leash and a treat in your hand, say your dog's name. As he begins to come towards you, give the command "Come". Bend down and encourage your dog as this can be less threatening and more encouraging for him to follow the command. As your dog approaches Praise him, pet him and give him the treat.
The Sit Command
Start with the Come command and as your dog approaches you, move your right hand with the treat inside over your dog's head. As your dog begins to sit give the "Sit" command. Then Praise him and give him the treat. Continue teaching this command in this fashion, while gradually taking the treat away, until only the word is being used.
The Down Command
With your dog in the sitting position, hold his collar with your left hand and with a treat in your right hand. Move the treat in an arc, from your dog's nose to the floor. As he naturally lowers himself, give the "Down" Command.
The Stay Command
Starting from the Down position, use a hand signal and the word "stay". Avoid using food as a reward when teaching this command, as he will become too excited and unable to remain still. Release from the stay position a few seconds later and Praise and pet your dog as a reward.
These are the basic commands that new dogs need to learn. Good luck and remember Praise, Persistence and Patience!
