First Aid Care & Supplies for Dogs

All dog owners should have a first aid kit readily available at all times for their dog! It is best to be prepared for an accident before it happens rather than if/when it happens. Many accidents can be minor but if not treated right away can grow into bigger problems for you and your dog.

You can make your own dog first aid kit or you can buy one that includes all the emergency care products you should need. To make your own kit, it may end up being more money in the long run by the time you buy each product separately but it all depends on what you are comfortable with.

Some items that you should have on hand for a dog emergency are:

* Gauze, bandages
* Rubbing alcohol, peroxide
* Safety scissors, tweezers - magnifying glass to see a splinter or wound.
* Antibiotic ointment, ice packs (in the freezer)

Did you know that some of the human products that we use can also help our dogs as well? Pepto Bismol is safe to give your dog for upset stomachs just as you might take it for an upset tummy! Aspirin can also be used for pain and minor injuries. However, please be sure to speak with your Veterinarian before giving your dog any of these products to make sure it is safe for your dog and what amount he recommends for the weight of your dog.
