Bullmastiff Dog Breed Profile

General Appearance: Bullmastiffs are a large, powerfully built breed but they are very agile and docile creatures. They have short coats that come in fawn, brindle and red; with a black mask. Fawn is the most common appearance of the mastiff.

Bullmastiffs originated in England back in the 1800’s. The Bullmastiff was created from breeding the Mastiff with the bulldog. Back in the 1800’s they were used as gamekeepers to protect the game.

Temperament: Bullmastiff’s are affectionately called “gentle giants”. They are very loveable and passive creatures. Should a Bullmastiff become annoyed or protective, he will take your arm and pin it in his mouth, without causing any harm – but just enough to let you know he means business!

Height: Males measure 25-27” and females 24-26”.

Weight: Males typically weigh up to 130lbs and females 120 lbs.

Size: Large Breed

Life Span: 10 years

Health Conditions/Concerns: Cancer, hip dysphasia, skin and coat allergies are all common amongst the bullmastiff breed. Every dog is different and you can have him tested as a puppy to find out if he is likely to be prone to hip dysphasia.

Good with Children: Yes – Bullmastiffs are known to do very well with children. They have a lot of patience and a high tolerance for pain such as when children are pulling and jumping all over them. However, it is still advisable to never leave a child unattended with any dog breed.

Good with other Pets: Yes although it will greatly depend on the your mastiffs personality. Some mastiff’s are more docile then others with males being slightly more aggressive then the female.
