Buy this Art Print
General Appearance: This dog breed has a dense and powerful, low-slung body with wide shoulders and a massive short-faced head. The Bulldog is the national symbol of Britain.
Breed Characteristics: The appearance of the English Bulldog is that of a smooth-coated, thickset dog, low in stature but broad, powerful and compact. The body is short and well knit; the limbs stout and muscular. The dog should convey an impression of determination, strength and activity.
Origin: 1200’s in England
Temperament: Despite its "sour look," the Bulldog is affectionate, comical, reliable and determined. The bulldog is amongst the most docile and mellow of dogs. Although it retains a stubborn streak, they are willing to please.
Height: 12-14 inches
Weight: Typically 55 lbs for a male and 50 lbs for a female
Size: Small
Life Span: 8-10 years
Health Conditions/Concerns: The bulldog cannot tolerate heat. Special precautions should be taken when anesthetizing a Bulldog. Caesarian deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most Bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms.
Good with Children: The bulldog is very good with children. Most are moderately friendly toward strangers as well.
Good with other Pets: Although some can be aggressive with strange dogs when food is present, the breed is good with other pets.
