Taking your Horses Vital Signs
Owning a horse can be a big responsibility and there are certain health conditions you will need to know about to keep your horse healthy and in good shape. Some of the most common health issues with horses are de-worming; fly control and to take his vital signs.
You should have your vet show you how to take your horses vital signs if you are not sure how. Taking his vital signs will include his respiration rate, pulse and temperature. Below we have outlined the process for you to explain further :
To measure your horse’s respiration rate, watch the rise and fall of your horse’s body between his ribs and thighs while counting the number of breaths per minute.
Your horses pulse is inside the lower jawbone, inside the knee, behind the left elbow. A normal horse pulse should be around 32 beats per minute when the horse is relaxing. If you are testing your horses pulse after activity, it can be over 100 beats per minute.
Your horse’s temperature should range between 98 degrees to 101 degrees on average. If you horse has a temperature higher than 102, this could be indicative of a problem or infection.
Having your horse’s vital signs available should you need to call your vet will be very helpful in determining what could possibly be wrong with him. Keeping aware of your horse and his vital signs will help assure that he is healthy.
